Thawang rural municipality is situated in the northern part of the Rolpa district. Adjoining VDCs such as Thawang, Merul and Uwah, were combined in Thawang rural municipality. The Rural municipality has total area of 191.06 square kilometers and is divided into 5 wards. Sunchhahari rural municipality lies in the east of Thawang rural municipality. Similarly, this rural municipality is surrounded by Pariwartan and Madi rural municipality in the west, Rolpa municipality in the north and Rukum district in the south. The geography of this rural municipality is composed of steep slopes and high mountain. Thawang rural municipality has the total population of the municipality is 10881 consisting male population 5035 and female population of 5846 according to National Population Census of Nepal 2011. There are 2172 households in Thawang rural municipality.

Majority of people belong to People belong to Magar Community followed by Brahaman, Chhetri, Thakuri, Sanyasi, Kaami, Damai, Sarki, Ghartietc. Hindus, Buddhists, Christian etc. resides celebrating Dashain, Tihar, Janaipurnima, Chandi Purnima, Buddhajayanti, Maghesarankti, Christmas festivals in a friendly manner. Nepali & Magar language is most spoken languages of this rural municipality. Panchebaja, Sorathi, Kaura, Sarangi Naach, Mayur Naach, Jhyaure, Balan, Chudkaetc are the cultural programs of this rural municipality. Paddy, Wheat, Corn, Mustard, Grain and various cash crops also harvest in this rural municipality. And people of this rural municipality also engaged in livestock business also and some are in abroad for foreign employment also.

Mr. Bir Bahadur Gharti Magar and Mrs. Ramkirani Roka Magar are the chairman and vice chairman of the Thawang rural municipality. The rural municipality office is situated in Thawang, Rolpa.
