The geographical area of Tapli Rural Municipality is 119 sq km. It has a population of 14567 according to census 2011. This rural municipality has five wards. It was formed by merging five former VDCs. It is surrounded by Rautamai, Sunkoshi gaunpalika in the east and Katari municipality in the west and Khotang district in the north and Ydaypurgadhi gaunpalika in the south. The headquarter of this municipality is situated in Rupatar.

Its name is derived from the Taple rani pokhari (pond) for its cultural importance among people living here.  The climate here is from subtropical to warm here. It is in Mahabharat range. Peole here are in to agriculture, business, foreign employment and daily wase work for livelihood.

The Chairperson and Vice chairperson this rural municipality are Uddhav Singh Thapa and Kamalamaya Rai respectively.
