Sunarya Rural Municipality is located at the mid-part of Baitadi district, Sudur Paschim province. it is named after the holy Hindu place where Ganga, Jamuna, Saraswati river starts and in this river Sur (gods) take Snan (bath). It was established in 2073 B.S. by combining then Hatairaj, Bashuling, Bhauneli, Rouleswor and Shikharpur Village Development Committees. It has been categorized into eight wards. It is surrounded by Shigas Rural Municipality at east, Dashrath Chand Municipality at west, Purchoudi Municipality at north and Patan Municipality at south. Longest natural tunnel of Asia, Pattalu bhumeswor Gufa is major tourist attraction of this Rural Municipality. It is covered by high altitude mountains.

According to the census 2011, total population of Sunarya Rural Municipality is 18,549 which include 3,321 households. Total population of male is 8,741 and female is 10,078. Ward number four is most populated ward followed by five and two. There are about twelve ethnic groups residing in this Rural Municipality, out of them Chhetri dominates the population by covering 65% population followed by Brahmin and Dalit. Baitadeli is the major language spoken. Literacy rate is 62%. It covers the total area of 124.52 kilometer square. Most of the land is covered by forest, mountains and rocks. Major occupation of people is survival agriculture and animal husbandry. Foreign employment is another major source of income. Paddy, wheat, maize and barley are major crops cultivated here.
