Shahid Lakhan Rural Municipality is situated at mid-south part of Gorkha district, Gandaki province. This Rural Municipality was established in 2073 B.S. by combining then Bungkot, Namjung, Gairung, Bakrang, Taklung and Manakamana Village Development Committees. This local unit is popular with its Holy Manakamana temple and Cable car goes to it. This local unit is surrounded by Bhimsen Thapa and Gandaki Rural Municipalities and Dhading district from east, Gorkha Municipality and Tanahu district from west, GorkhaMunicipality and Bhimsen Thapa Rural Municipality from north and Gandaki Rural Municipality and Chitwan and Tanahu districts from south. This local unit is named after first Martyr of Nepal Lakhan Thapa who was born here and fought against Rana regime. There are nine wards in this local unit.

As per the census 2011, total population of this Rural Municipality is 27,555 which include 6,679 households. Ward number six is most populated ward. There are about 23 ethnic communities residing under this Rural Municipality, among them largest community is Magar constituting 36.74% of population followed by Newar and Brahmin. Among 11 different mother tongues spoken under this local unit, Nepali is most popular language covering 71.64% population followed by Magar. Hindu is largest followed religion. Agriculture and tourism are major occupations. Other then Manakamana temple, there are number of religious and tourism prospective areas under this Rural Municipality. It covers total area of 148.97 kilometer square. Most of the area is covered by forest, mountain rocks and farming land.

Mr. Ramesh Babu Thapa Magar is Chairperson and Ms. Indira Tiwari is Vice-chairperson of this Rural Municipality. Center of this Rural Municipality is ward number six Pipalchhap, Ghairung village. Total number of elected local representatives is 47. Number of employees working under Rural Municipality administration is 35.
