Palata rural municipality is situated in the northern part of the Kalikot district. Existing VDCs such as Dhaulagoha, Khin and Thirpu, were combined in Palata rural municipality. The Rural municipality has total area of 318.83 square kilometers and is divided into 9 wards. Jumla district lies in the east of Palata rural municipality. Similarly, this rural municipality is surrounded by Pachaljharana rural municipality and Bajura district in the west, Mugu district in the north and Pachaljharana rural municipality and Tilagupha rural municipality in the south. The geography of this rural municipality is steep slopes with high mountain and cold weather. Palata rural municipality has the total population of the municipality is 15303 consisting male population 7763 and female population of 7540 as of Census of Nepal 2011. There are 2421 households in Palata rural municipality.

Bam, Shahi, Sanjyal, Brahmin, Chhetri, Dalit, Janajatietc are some of the major caste groups who reside in this rural municipality and celebrates Dashain, Tihar, Magheshakranti, Ramnawami, Baishakepurnima, Janaipurnima, Teej, Holi, Loshar etc. festivals in a friendly manner. Majority of people speak nepali language. All the residential of this rural municipality are engaged in agriculture & livestock farming too. Mr. Laxman Bahadur Bam and Mrs. Dana Neupane are the chairman and vice chairman of the Palata rural municipality. The rural municipality office is situated in Palata, Kalikot.
