Nepalgunj Sub-Metropolitan City is located in Banke district on the Terai plains near the southern border with Bahraich district, Uttar Pradesh state of India. One of the  developed sub-metropolis of the country, it is 85 kilometers south-west of Ghorahi and 16 km south of Kohalpur and 35 kilometers east of Gulariya.

Previous VDCs like Udayapur, Bhawaniyapur, Piprahawa, Jaispur, Paraspur, Indrapur, Kaskarkado, Bashudevpur, Manikapur and Puraina were merged to form this sub-metropolis on Poush 28, 2071. To make the restructuring complete, ward number 23 of former Indrapur VDC was taken out of Janaki Rural Municipality and ward number 7 of Hirminiya VDC was added to this Sub-metropolis.

The heart of this city, Dhamboji is the most important traffic junction of the town. Also referred as Birendra Chowk, this junction is the main business with facilities relating to trading, business and service being available. The 24 kilometer long Surkhet Road starts from Mahendra Chowk in Kohalpur and ends at the Nepal-India Border running through the middle of the city and passing through Dhambojhi Chowk and two other important junctions- Pushpalal Chowk and BP Chowk, creating a network of roads that cover the major portion of city’s industrial and residential areas.

Regarding the transportation facility, Nepalgunj Airport is located 6 kilometer north of the city center. The airport operates flights to Kathmandu as well as some remote hilly districts like Dolpa, Mugu, Jumla and Rukum.

The country’s longest highway, Mahendra Highway runs through the town of Kohalpur, 10 kilometers from Nepalgunj city center. Similarly, an Indian Railways line reachesRupaidhya across the border.

As of 2011 Census this sub-metropolis has 73,779 inhabitants

Nepali is spoken by the hilly inhabitants yet, the mother tongue is still Awadhi.

Temperature has huge effects in the lifestyle of people living in this city. Due to extreme heat in summer season, people wear light cotton clothes and rarely come out during the day time. While in the winter season, the temperature goes down up to 4 °C.

Bageshwori Temple is a renowned temple for Hindu devotees in the country as well as those coming from nearest border cities of India.

Nepalgunj has a diverse culture with people from different faiths, tradition and religions living within mixed communities. Hinduism and Islam are two major religions in the city with Hindus comprising larger percentage of the population. Other religions like Buddhism, Sikhism and Christianity are among in the minorities.

Divided into 23 wards, Dhawal Sumsher Rana is the Mayor and Uma Thapa Magar is the Sub-mayor of this sub-metropolis.
