Melung Rural Municipality situates southern part of the Dolakha district.Melung Rural Municipality was formed by combining then Pawati, Ghyansukathokar, Bhedapu, Dandakharka, and Melung VDCs. The Rural municipality has total area of 86.54 square kilo meter and is divided into 7 wards.
Tamakoshi rural municipality lies in the east of Melung Rural municipality. Similarly, this rural municipality is surrounded by Sailung rural municipality and Ramechhap district in the west, Sailung rural municipality in the north and Ramechhap district in the south. The name of Melung rural municipality is named after a historical place ‘Melung’. According a legend, a monk came from Tibat in search of a place to establish a market and chanted a spritial mantra than a fire was seen in ‘Melung Bazar’. In Tamang language ‘Me’ mean fire and ‘Lung’ mean ‘burn’. Thus name Melung kept as a place where fire was burnt. Sailung danda, famous hill for hiking, in near from this rural municipality.
