Melung Rural Municipality situates southern part of the Dolakha district.Melung Rural Municipality was formed by combining then Pawati, Ghyansukathokar, Bhedapu, Dandakharka, and Melung VDCs. The Rural municipality has total area of 86.54 square kilo meter and is divided into 7 wards.

Tamakoshi rural municipality lies in the east of Melung Rural municipality. Similarly, this rural municipality is surrounded by Sailung rural municipality and Ramechhap district in the west, Sailung rural municipality in the north and Ramechhap district in the south. The geography of this Rural municipality includes naturally decorated high hills mountains, and cold weather. Melung  rural municipality has the total population of 21,210 consisting male population 9,015 and female population of 11,195 as of Census of Nepal 2011. There are 4,841 households in Melung  rural municipality.

The name of Melung rural municipality is named after a historical place ‘Melung’. According a legend, a monk came from Tibat in search of a place to establish a market and chanted a spritial mantra than a fire was seen in ‘Melung Bazar’. In Tamang language ‘Me’ mean fire and ‘Lung’ mean ‘burn’. Thus name Melung kept as a place where fire was burnt. Sailung danda, famous hill for hiking, in near from this rural municipality. Tamang, Kshetri, Brahaman, Jirel, Thami etc. are the major ethnic group of Melung rural municipality.Tamang, Kshetri, Brahaman, Jirel, Thami etc. are the major ethnic group of Baiteshowr rural municipality. Agriculture and tourism are the major source of income of this rural municipality. People do livestock farming as their major economic activities

Mr. Nar Bahadur Shrestha and Mrs. Kalpana Bhandari are the chairman and vice chairman of the Melung  rural municipality. The rural municipality office is situated in Bhedup, Dolakha.
