The geographical area of Makalu Rural Municipality is 519.45 sq km. It has a population of 13204 according to census 2011. This rural municipality has six wards. It was formed by merging parts of five different former VDCs. The headquarter of this municipality is situated in Num.
This area is the base of Makalu-Barun Himalayan range. So the trekking routes to Himalayas has high tourism potential. The water resource here are also the national pride project in hydro power production, and royalty from these resources can be of major source of income to enhance life of people here.
The Chairperson and Vice chairperson this rural municipality are Tej Bahadur Pokhrarel and Chameli Yamphu Rai respectively.
