Mahawai rural municipality is situated in the eastern part of the Kalikot district. Existing VDCs such as Odanku, Gela and Chilkhaya, were combined in Mahawai rural municipality. The Rural municipality has total area of 322.06 square kilometers and is divided into 7 wards. Jajarkot district lies in the east of Mahawai rural municipality. Similarly, this rural municipality is surrounded by Shubhakalika rural municipality in the west, Tilagupha rural municipality in the north and Dailekh district in the south. The geography of this rural municipality is steep slopes with high mountain and cold weather. Mahawai rural municipality has the total population of the municipality is 8323 consisting male population 4195 and female population of 4128 as of Census of Nepal 2011. There are 1447 households in Mahawai rural municipality.
Bam, Shahi, Singh, Brahmin, Chhetri, Dalit, Janajatietc are some of the major caste groups who reside in this rural municipality and celebrates Dashain, Tihar, Magheshakranti, Ramnawami, Baishakepurnima, Janaipurnima, Teej, Holi, Loshar etc. festivals in a friendly manner. Majority of people speak nepali language. All the residential of this rural municipality are engaged in agriculture & livestock farming too. Mr. Nanda Bahadur Singh and Mr. Manraj Sahi are the chairman and vice chairman of the Mahawai rural municipality. The rural municipality office is situated in Padhghat, Kalikot.
