The geographical area of Mahakulung Rural Municipality is 648.05 sq km. It has a population of 11452 according to census 2011. This rural municipality has five wards. It was formed by merging three former VDCs. It is surrounded by Shankhuwasabha district in the east and Khumbu Pasang lhamu and Sotang gaunpalika in the west and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu gaunpalika in the north and Khotang and Bhojpur district in the south. The headquarter of this municipality is situated in Bung.

Kirat population is dominant in number followed by Buddhist and Hindu in this gaunpalika. Farming and tourism is the main source of livelihood of people living here.

The administrative structure under this municipality has six major departments. They are Administration, Planning and Monitoring Department, Infrastructural development and Monitoring Department, Social and Economic Development Department, Education, Youth and Sports Department, Information and Technology Department and Internal Account management Unit.

The Chairperson and Vice chairperson this rural municipality are Sagar Kirati and Bipana Kulung respectively.
