Mahabu rural municipality is situated in the middle-north part of the Dailekh district. VDCs such as Kharigaira (1-7), Badakhola, Bansi, Raniban, and Kansikandh (1-7, 9), were combined in Mahabu rural municipality. The Rural municipality has total area of 110.8 square kilo meter and is divided into 6 wards. Narayan municipality and Naumuli rural municipality lies in the east of Mahabu rural municipality. Similarly, this rural municipality is surrounded by Bhairabi rural municipality in the west, Kalikot district in the north and Bhairabi rural municipality and Narayan municipality in the south. The geography of this rural municipality steeply and high mountain and cold weather. Mahabu rural municipality has the total population of the municipality is 19277 consisting male population 8933 and female population of 10344 according to the population  Census of Nepal 2011. There are 3553 households in Mahabu rural municipality.

Sahi, Budha, Malla, Brahmin, Chhetri, Dalit, Janajatietc are major caste and ethnic groups residing in this rural municipality and celebrates Dashain, Tihar, Magheshakranti, Ramnawami, Baishakepurnima, Janaipurnima, Teej, Holi, Loshar etc. festivals in a friendly manner. Nepali is the commonly spoken language. Majority of peopleof this rural municipality are engaged in agriculture & livestock farming too. The atmosphere & climate of this rural municipality is healthy & good. Paddy, Wheat, Corn, Maize and various cash crops are the main agro product of this rural municipality.

Mr. Janga Bahadur Shahi and Mrs. Prem Kumari Budha are the chairman and vice chairman of the Mahabu rural municipality. The rural municipality office is situated in Gaidabaz, Dailekh.
