Machhapuchhre Rural Municipality is situated at mid-north part of Kaski district, Gandaki province. Including major tourism attraction places of Annapurna conservative area, this Rural Municipality was established in 2073 B.S. It combines then VDCs- Dhampus, Dhital, Ghachok, Lahachok, Lyanghlel, Rivan and Sardi Khola. This Rural Municipality is surrounded by Madi Rural Municipality from east, Annapurna Rural Municipality from west, Manang district from north and Pokhara Lekhanath Metropoliton city and Parbat district from south. This is connected by Pokhara-Baglung highway. This is named after Machhapuchhre (Fish tail) Mount which looks like tail of fish and is 6993 meter high. This local unit is divided into 9 wards.
Population of Machhapuchhre Rural Municipality is 21,868 covering 5,512 households as per the census 2011. Population of female is 11,292 and male is 9,380. Ward number two is most populated ward. It covers 544.58 kilometer square area. Most of the land is covered by forest, followed by grass area, farming area and snow covered land. Literacy rate is 69.7%. There are about ten ethnic groups residing under this local unit. Major ethnic groups are Brahmin, Kami, Gurung, Chhetri and Magar. Brahmins are largest ethnic groups constituting 30.2% of population. Tourism and farming are major occupations of people residing here. Nepali is largest language spoken followed by Gurung. Macchapuchhre base camp, Dhampus and virgin lake are some of the tourist areas. This is high quantity trout fish producing local level of Nepal.
Mr. Karna Bahadur Gurung is Chairperson of Machhapuchhre Rural Municipality and Ms. Krishna Kumari Poudel Dawadi is Vice-chairperson. Total number of local representatives is 47. Ward number 4, Lahachok village is the center of this local unit.
