The geographical area of Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality is 1539.11 sq km, it is the second largest gaunpalika by its occupancy of land. It has a population of 9133 according to census 2011. This rural municipality has five wards. It was formed by merging four former VDCs. The headquarter of this municipality is situated in Chaurikharka.
The first Sherpa lady who climbed Mount Everest from this Khumbu region was Pasang Lhamu Sherpa. To honour her did the place is named after her representing the its region. Geographical condition of this rural municipality is very difficult. It is the highest elevated land in the world. The elevation of land making it different climates zones within the gaunpalika. World’s most dangerous/ adventurous airport Lukla Airport is here as well.
The Highest peak Mt Everest is here, which in Nepali is called as Sagarmatha and in Tibetan language it is called as Chomolungma. It is also known as the third pole of the world and the top of the world. There are many peaks around the Everest and in the Himalayan Range Lhotse, Nupse, Chuyu, Amadabalam, Pumori, Thamserku, etc. This is the world-renowned Khumbu Icefall. Tourists from all over the world visit the Khumbu region for trekking to see the spectacular Himalayan panoramic views of the area. Kharikhola, Lukla, Phakding, Manju, Namche, Khumjung, Khunde, Tengboche, Forche, Pangboche, Firiche, Dingboche, Thame, Gokyo, Labuche, Gorkhep, etc. are the main settlements of this area. Lukla Airport also known as the gateway to the Namche and Mt. Everest. Most of the Sherpa tribes live in this area, with the language associated with Sherpa being the identity of Sanskrit Buddhists. The important monasteries, including the Tengboche Monastery, the Pangboche Monastery, the Rimijung Monastery, the Khairkhola Monastery, are the tower of faith. The tourist destinations are in the Himalayas in the Hieroglyphs, ascending and trekking the mountains. The Everest base camp, including Kalapathar, becomes the destination of most.
After the demise of elected Chairperson, the Vice chairperson Tashilhamu Sherpa is heading the gaunpalika team at the moment.
