Kankasundari rural municipality is situated in the western part of the Jumla district. Existing VDCs such as Brummadichaur, Malikawota, Kankasundari, Birat and Pandavgupha, were combined in Kankasundari rural municipality. The Rural municipality has total area of 225.38square Kilometers and is divided into 8 wards. Patarasi rural municipality and Chandannath municipality lies in the east of Kankasundari rural municipality. Similarly, this rural municipality is surrounded by Bajura district in the west, Mugu district in the north and Sinja rural municipality in the south. The geography of this rural municipality is steep slopes with high mountain and cold weather. Kankasundari rural municipality has the total population of the municipality is 13216 consisting male population 6590 and female population of 6626 as of Census of Nepal 2011. There are 2247 households in Kankasundari rural municipality.

The name of this rural municipality is based on famous temple Kanakasundari of Sija Valley. Sija is the central office of this rural municipality. Pandab Cave, Birat Durbar, Garudanuhani, Tilichaur Mai, Bhulambhale, Chuchemara Lake, Kanakasundari etc. are the famous tourist area of this rural municipality. Budha, Karki, Rawat, Rokaya, Brahmin, Chhetri, Dalit, Janajati etc reside in this rural municipality ad celebrates Dashain, Tihar, Magheshakranti, Ramnawami, Baishakepurnima, Janaipurnima, Teej, Holi, Loshar etc. festivals in a friendly manner. Majority of people speak nepali language. All the residential of this rural municipality are independent in agriculture and also engaged in livestock farming too. The atmosphere & climate of this rural municipality is healthy & good.

Mr. Narabir Rawat and Mrs. Urmila Bhandari are the chairman and vice chairman of the Kankasundari rural municipality. The rural municipality office is situated in Birat, Sija Jumla.
