Kachankawal is a rural municipality out of 7 rural municipalities situated in Jhapa district under the Province No. 1. With an area of 110 square kilometers and total population of 39,593 up to 2011, the rural municipality was established merging five former VDCs including, Gherabari, Pathariya, Kechana, Pathamari, Baniyani and Balubadi.
Kechanakawal Gaunpalika lies in the lowest point of Nepal with an elevation of only 58 meter above the sea level. Regarding its border, it shares eastern border with neighboring India while Bharadashi Gaunpalika and India shares border in the west. Similarly, it is connected by Haldibari Gaunpalika and Bhadrapur Municipality in the north and also touched by India towards the south.
While agriculture and animal husbandry remains as the main occupation of this Gaunpalika, this is one of the rural municipalities with higher literacy rate standing at 71.24 percent. There are a total of 48 schools in this Gaunpalika including, 29 community based school.
Rice, maize, wheat and barley are the major food crops and betel nut, ginger, tea and turmeric are major cash crops produced. Almost 84.2 percent of the population has electricity access in this Gaunpalika and has very easy access to road and transportation.
Anjar Alam from Rastriya Prajatantra Party is an elected Chairperson of the rural municipality and Nimsari Rajbanshi of the same party was elected for the position of Vice-chairperson after the results of the Local-level Elections held in Nepal on 28 June 2017.
