Gauriganj

Gauriganj is a Rural Municipality located in the south western corner of Jhapa under Province No. 1. This Gaunpalika sits in a flat agricultural land between Kadamgachhi, Hukkagachhi and Bhavanipur, only about 3 km from the border of Bihar, India.

Formed by merging four former VDCs—Mahavara, Korobari, Gaurigunj and Khajurganchi—the name of this gaupalika was chosen from the name of one of its former VDC, Gaurigunj. Jhapa Municipality lies towards the east and Ratuwamai Municipality of Morang district lies towards the west of this Gaunpalika. Similarly, this Gaunpalika shares its northern border with Gauridaha Municipality, Kami Rural Municipality and Shivasatashi Municipality and southern border with neighboring India.

Elevated from 66 meter to 84.5 meter from the sea level, the area of this Gaunpalika is 101.35 square kilometer. With a total population of 36,145 and density of 460.74, this rural municipality is divided into six wards.

People from different ethnic and religious backgrounds have live in this Gaunpalika. Majority of dwellers are engaged in agriculture while the rest belong to the business for their livelihood. A majority of people, about 25 percent, speak Rajbanshi as their mother tongue, followed by Nepali language. When it comes to religion, a huge population is of Hindu (about 91 percent).

This Gaunpalika is very resourceful in human resources since more than 83 percent of the population is economically active.

There are a total of 20 community schools, 25 private schools, one primary health care center, two health posts, and one sub-health post. The literacy rate of this Gaunpalika is 76 percent.

Babu Raja Shrestha is Chairman and Dipendra Thapa is the Vice-Chairman of this Gaunpalika which has five departments including, Administration and Planning Department, Infrastructure Development Department, Women and Social Development Department, Education Department and Economic Development Department.
