Dharan Sub-metropolitan City lies in Sunsari district under Province No.1 .Located in eastern Nepal with a geographic feature of Terai, Dharan was country’s fourth municipality established in 1958. It is situated on the foothills of the Mahabharat range in the north with its southern tip touching the edge of the Terai at an altitude of 349 meter above the sea level.
This place was also named the headquarters of Koshi Zone when the country was divided into 14 zones and 75 districts.
This is one of the most beautiful city of country having vast cultural diversity.
Mainly the abode of Kirat and mangolians, this sub-metropolis has religious significance as myths have it that a teeth of Goddess Satidevi had fallen in this place.
Initially the land with dense forest, the settlement began with deforestation. However, the migration and movement of people have increased dramatically with the establishment of British Gurkha Recruitment Center.
The Koshi highway runs through the heart of the city connecting it with the provincial capital, Biratnagar as well as the Itahari junction of the east-west Mahendra highway.
Previously a municipality, Dharan was promoted to sub-metropolis on Mangsir 16, 2071 by Cabinet decision. Though the Cabinet had decided the formation of 27 wards, it was later revised to 20 by Federal Restructuring Commission.
Having earned popularity for local art, culture, tradition and sports, this sub-metropolis is also begin developed as a hub for education, health and tourism.
With a total area of 74.26 square meter, a total of 141,439 lives in this sub-metropolis making the population density of 734.33 per square kilometer.
With Tilak Rai as a Mayor and Manju Subedi Deputy-Mayor, this sub-metropolis has a total of 30 elected representatives.
