Situated towards the southern face of Ilam district, Chulachuli Rural Municipality was formed by combing two then VDCs, Chulachuli and Sakfara. The gaunpalika has totalarea of 108.46 square kilo meter and is divided into six wards. Mai Municipality lies in the east of Chulachuli gaunpalika. Similarly, this rural municipality is surrounded by Morang district in the west, Mangsebung Rural Municipality in the north and Jhapa district in the south. The geography of this gaunpalika includes steep hills as well as plain lands. Since there are some hillocks risen in the Chure located in this area like hearth stone, the place is named Chulachuli.
Chalachuli has an area of 108.46 square kilometres and the total population of the municipality is 20,820 as of Census of Nepal 2011. Chalachuli was a VDC which turned into rural municipality when fulfilling the requirement of the new constitution of 2015. To fulfil the requirements of a rural municipality an adjoining village development committee named Sakphara was added to it.
This gaunpalika has the settlement of 7.2 percent out of the total population of Ilam district. About 55 ethnic groups live in this rural municipality with Rai population being dominant followed by Limbu and Brahmin/Chettri. This gaunpalika has 4,329 households.
The rural municipality is divided into total 6 wards and the center of this newly formed rural municipality is situated in ward no. 6. Pradip Chandra Rai is the Chairman of this rural municipality and Nirmala Dahal is Vice-chairman.
